Sura Al-An’am from 151 to 153
151. Say (O Muhammad (saas)) :« Come, I will recite what your Lord has prohibited you from: Join not anything in worship with Him; be good and dutiful to your parents; kill not your children because of poverty – We provide sustenance for you and for them; come not near to Al- Fawâhish (shameful sins, illegal sexual intercourse) whether committed openly or secretly; and kill not anyone whom Allâh has forbidden, except for a just cause (according to Islâmic law) . This He has commanded you that you may understand.»
152.« And come not near to the orphan’s property, except to improve it, until he (or she) attains the age of full strength; and give full measure and full weight with justice. We burden not any person, but that which he can bear. And whenever you give your word (i.e. judge between men or give evidence) , say the truth even if a near relative is concerned, and fulfil the Covenant of Allâh. This He commands you, that you may remember.»
153.« And verily, this (i.e. Allâh’s Commandments mentioned in the above two Verses 151 and 152) is My Straight Path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His Path. This He has ordained for you that you may become Al- Muttaqûn ( the pious – see V.2:2) . »
The Ten Commandments in Islam are ordered by Allah (saw) for every Muslim to follow. A Muslim believes in the five pillars explained by the Prophet (pbuh) and being defined as follows:
The “shahadah”, being witnessing Allah as the only Lord to be worshipped.
The “Salat”, which is the prayer that every Muslim is ordered to preform five times a day.
The “Siam”, which is the fasting of the month of Ramadan for the Muslim, male or female, who reached the age of puberty and who does suffers from a serious mental illness that make him unaware of his actions.
The”Zakat”, being the special charity that should be paid by every Muslim who owns the “Nissab”, the value of money that makes it subject to Zakat. This amount should be unused for 12 months for it to be subject to Zakat, otherwise, Zakat is not due.
The “Hajj”, being the pilgrimage to the Holly House of Allah, where the Kaaba is located, in the 9th day of the month of Dhu Al Hijjah. Hajj is due on every Muslim who is mentally, physically, and financially capable once in a lifetime.
This introduction of the pillars of Islam are understood to be the requirement on every Muslim to perform but do not represent the entire religion but rather they are the foundations upon which the religion grows with the Muslim during his lifetime practice.
The Ten Commandments come to complete the pillars of Islam and are ordered by every to abide by, in addition to the pillars.
1- Join not anything in worship with Him
The Shahada in Islam is: There is no deity but Allah and Mohammad is his prophet. Nothing can be associated with Allah in worship, whether an idol, a human, or anything else. Allah is One and he is the creator of the universe, humans, plants, animals, and everything. Everything belongs to him and will go back to him.
2- Be good and dutiful to your parents
Parents are given an extreme importance in Islam and Allah (swt) mentioned their importance on many occasions in Quran and particularly in Sura Al Israa and Sura Luqman, besides Sura Al Anaam. Regardless of their believes, parents should be cherished and well treated as the Sunnah states in multiple Hadiths when believers asked the prophet (pbuh) whether they should keep in contacts with their parents who are not Muslim or not, he pushed them to treat their parents and obey them as long as they do not force the Muslim children to disobey Allah (swt), they should then abstain from this obedience with offending the parents. The Prophet (pbuh) emphasized the importance of parents and especially the mother.
3- Kill not your children because of poverty – We provide sustenance for you and for them
This command is directed to the individual who is held responsible of his children’s wellbeing. Killing children refers mainly to abortion when the parent is poor and considers the wife’s pregnancy a burden. This command induces the prohibition of abortion in Islam.
4- Come not near to Al- Fawâhish (shameful sins, illegal sexual intercourse) whether committed openly or secretly
These types of signs include prohibited sexual relations but other sins that are considered major sins are also subject to a severe warning for even getting near of. False witness is a major sin, working on the separation of family or close friends is a sin strongly condemned by the Prophet (SAW). The false accusation of an innocent women ( of a sexual relation) is severely condemned in the Quran ( Sura An Nour) and in the sunna.
5- Kill not anyone whom Allâh has forbidden, except for a just cause (according to Islâmic law)
No person is allowed to kill any other person except in the state of defense. The just cause, besides self defense, is determined by the authority and an individual has no authority in this decision.
This command is the responsibility of the authority as it requires a legal process. An authority is not supposed to falsely accuse and prosecute an innocent person.
Objective: This He has commanded you that you may understand
These commands incite the person to use common sense and Fitra ( the natural instinct of the human).
6- Come not near to the orphan’s property, except to improve it, until he (or she) attains the age of full strength
The orphan has a special situation in Islam. Whether he is a male or female, his property is protected through the appointment of a trustee who is preferred to be a close relative or a trustful person assigned by the judge. The trustee should be responsible of improving the orphan’s money without using any of it unless he is in extreme necessity to do so, in which case he should use what covers his minimal surviving needs.
7- Give full measure and full weight with justice. We burden not any person
The measure and weight mentioned in this aya and in the ayas of sura Al Israa, as well as the ones mentioned in sura Ar Rahmaan are not limited to the measurements covering the weight, surface, volume, and other measuring units, but it goes beyond this limited understanding to every measurement form that develops with the advancement of science and technology. One of its examples is the protection of intellectual property.
8- Whenever you give your word (i.e. judge between men or give evidence) , say the truth even if a near relative is concerned
9- Fulfil the Covenant of Allâh
Objective: This He commands you, that you may remember
10- My Straight Path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His Path
Objective: This He has ordained for you that you may become pious
